What is Windows Disk Defragmenter?
The disk defragmenter that
is supplied with the Windows Operating system is a very powerful tool
that sorts the files on your computer, thus making it faster. For
example, say you go to a library, and and the books are all in different
places and not in a certain order, or say someone takes a book and
later misplaces it on another shelf, obviously it will take you a long
time, if not forever in a large library, to find the book you are
looking for. That same way we can look at the files on your hard drive,
each time you install or delete a file on your computer, fragments
(pieces) of that file become scattered in different parts of your hard
drive, and over time the files will be in so many different places that
your computer will slow down trying to search for those files.
In
order to speed up your computer you can use the disk defragmenter and
it will arrange your files and sort them to efficiently look them up
later. So lets start it up; Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
Once the program is open, click on the "Defragment" button and it will
first analyze your hard drive and then it will automatically start the
defragmenting process. This could take some time and it is recommended
not to use your computer while it is defragmenting or it wont be able to
properly optimize your system.
Once that is done
restart your computer and notice the difference that a simple defrag can
make. I recommend that you defrag your computer once a week to keep
your computer running smoothly and efficiently.
Here is a good third party defragmenter by Piriform called "Defraggler": https://www.piriform.com/defraggler
